A short video presentation about trying to see and hear the many silences that public libraries are organised around. Featuring a sample of rough cuts from an artwork-in-the-making shot at Chetham's Library during that liminal time between lockdown and the slow reawakening of cultural spaces in spring 2020.
Chetham's Library in Central Manchester is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. This talk was delivered for the inaugural Festival of Libraries at the invitation of Head Librarian, Fergus Wilde.
This work-in-progress was consolidated one year later in the project, 'Seeing Libraeries Differently', and the final video, Tender Silences. It builds on years of thinking and making with and about libraries. More information can be found via the Related Entries link.
