The first institutional exhibition to explore the shared challenges faced by public galleries and public libraries, and the relationship of independent publishing to both. Co-devised by me, the exhibition featured work by The Book Lovers, Beatrice Catanzaro, Curandi Katz, Sean Dockray & Benjamin Forster, Emily Jacir, My Bookcase, OOMK, Open Humanities Press, The Serving Library, Temporary Services, and me. The works exhibited included books, photos, sculptures, video, software, file-sharing devices, workshops, and a publishing studio.
The show was commissioned by and first presented at CCA Glasgow in 2017, then re-curated for The Tetley, Leeds, in 2018. The exhibition hosted numerous workshops and events, including reading groups, public seminars and book launches, as well as the Artist Self-Publisher's Fair led by Sara MacKillop and Dan Mitchell. The engagement programmes for the exhibition were developed through a blend of curator-led and community-proposed strands. The library within the exhibition also hosted publications by countless other collectives, publishers and community groups, while the fully functioning publishing studio enabled the production of new publications by members of the public.
