Commissioned for the CIRCA Projects' Presents… series in collaboiration with the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (NGCA) in Sunderland, this exhibition worked on three fronts — online, in the gallery, and via the invitation card — to propose ‘conceptualist reading performances’ as a method for making art. This method grafts the aesthetic legacy of Conceptual art onto various contemporary notions of writing (from literary composition to data management) in order to produce materially-specific poems as artworks that somehow re-read a found object, image, or text.
The exhibition celebrated the art of reading things differently, working against counter-productive divisions between contemporary art and contemporary literature.
To appropriately survey the work of IAM it was decided that the show would have to focus on friendships and stimulate new collaboration. As such, the show features a number of artists and poets who have supported and particated in the various activies of Information As Material since its inception in 2002.
